It's getting worse.
Every year since 2021, I list all of my tweets that received zero likes or retweets whatsoever. In 2024, I hit a record — 31 out of 224 tweets receieved no engagement. This is 2.5x more than the average. Does it say something about X/Twitter or something about me?
Some of these tweets happened on the same day, some in consecutive days. Some happened on major holidays, some happened on major engagement days. Some were quote tweets, some were originally crafted.
Here is 2024's batch.

I will be going to this baseball game [link to Baseball Team Renames Itself After Salad Dressing]
I made it to February without a zero-liked tweet this year. This tweet actually represents a big part of my year — it was when I first found out about "white french dressing" and the minor league baseball team that changed its name in honor of it. I ended up traveling to Akron, Ohio to make a podcast about it, which I spent a few months working on. Not many people listened, no one liked this tweet. [123 views]

cannoli is plural [quote tweeting a deleted scene from the mario movie]
It bothers me when people call multiple cannoli "cannolis." In this deleted scene from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario tells Luigi they should go home, noting a possiblity that their uncle Tony didn't "hammer all the cannolis." This is wrong. Cannoli is the plural form of the word, and cannolo is the singular form of the word. This is why we wanted an authentic Italian-American for the role of Mario. I'm glad this scene was deleted. cant believe the thundermans returned
This year we saw a sequel to the Nickelodeon show The Thundermans, which originally aired from 2013-2018. The Thundermans Return movie premeiered in March of this year, reuniting the original cast. Since this was a kids show, I don't think many people knew what I was talking about. [148 views]

how many spatulas are in your kitchen? [poll]
I noticed I had a good amount of spatulas in my kitchen drawer (at the time 5), and wanted to know if this was normal. 22 people did engage with this post, but no one technically "liked" it. [179 views]

thinking about 20 years of Bowling For Soup‘s A Hangover You Don’t Deserve
Bowling For Soup's 2004 album A Hangover You Don't Deserve is one of the few albums I know all the lyrics from start to finish (all ninteeen songs!!), and I had realized we were coming up on the 20th anniversary of the album. It turns out the band was also thinking about this and toured this year playing every song from the album this fall. I saw a show on the tour in New York City and loved every minute of it. No BFS mutuals I guess. [136 views]

what song do you think weezer is going to play on john mulaneys show tonight
Weezer (one of my favorite bands) was a musical guest on John Mulaney's Netflix live talk show Everybody's In LA (one of my favorite shows of the year) and I was excited to hear them play a song from both The Blue Album AND Pinkerton. I'm not sure how many people watched the show live. [197 views]

Trump really makes Nixon look so tame, but there are some weird conservatives that are trying to retcon Nixon as a victim of a conspiracy [link to ‘Seinfeld’ Star John O’Hurley Hopes His Watergate Doc Can Help Reshape Nixon’s Legacy]
Turns out George Buggatti (writer of the right-leaning Nixon play Trial on the Potomac that I featured in my 2022 episode of AWYLATT) wrote and directed a "documentary" called Watergate’s Secrets and Betrayals, which continues to prop up some Trumpian claims that there was a secret coup to oust Nixon as president during the Watergate era. I still haven't seen this, but if its anything like the play, it will be visibily biased toward the "research" of deputy consel for the Watergate defense team Geoff Shepard. Kinda niche. [95 views]

just got a turkish airlines ad on here lol
This was tweeted the day NYC Mayor Eric Adams was indicted in an international bribery scandal with Turkish Airlines. X was wild during that time! I thought it was funny that I got a Turkish Airlines ad on the platform that day. Hard to understand out of context. Mayor Adams has yet to pay for his crimes. [77 views]

I want to see the living room movie in IMAX
The "living room movie" I was referring to was Here, the Robert Zemeckis film starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. I liked the idea of a movie holding a single angle in a singular location the entire time, as an artistic diretion. Seeing it in a big IMAX screen might have made that pretty immersive. This movie did not come out in IMAX, and it was not a particularly phonemonal movie. Like most of these tweets, I'm not sure anyone knew what I was talking about. [132 views]

might go see Here and hit up Bubba Gump Shrimp tomorrow
Here I addressed the actual name of the living room movie, Here and still no likes. This movie was a Forrest Gump reunion of sorts, so I thought it would be fun to go to the Forrest Gump-themed restaurant in midtown Manhattan after seeing Here. Allegra did not want to do this, but we did see the movie. (Allegra's review: "2 stars, not nap-inducing but close") [130 views]

wish i was invited to this dharma & greg party [quote tweeting a picture of taylor swift in an interesting outfit]
Taylor Swift was critcized for this dress when it came up on my feed in November, but I kinda like it. It reminds me of something that Jenna Elfman's Dharma would wear in the late 90s/early 2000s sitcom Dharma & Greg. [181 views]

realizing you can buy just the cheese for mac n cheese
I was wondering if I could buy just the cheese powder that comes with boxed mac n cheese — turns out you can! I phrased the tweet in a funnier way, as if I didn't realize that cheese was a food found outside of macaroni dishes. [111 views]

probably my favorite scene in the original run of the show [quote tweeting a screencap of a scene in Twin Peaks]

the woke right [quote tweeting Rolling Stone's Walmart will not renew a five-year commitment to an equity racial center created after the murder of George Floyd in 2020.]

yankees are actually playing the long game and slowly becoming the underdog for the next couple decades
The New York Yankees were kings for a long time in its history, and still have the most World Series wins, but the New York Mets have become a NYC favorite this past year (rightfully so). I think in order for New York Yankees to be the hometown hero again, they need to lose a bunch for the next decade or two and become underdogs. That's the only way. [144 views]

Nixon listening to a comedy album about JFK [excerpt from the book The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels and the History of American Comedy]
I recently have been following a bunch of accounts that represent "president twitter" so I thought this might appeal to them. [122 views]
I did not count the tally until I finished this post, so 31 was a surprise to me!
The increase of zero engagement does makes sense though. I have less and less active mutuals and I typically stay on the "For You" page rather than looking at just tweets from people I follow. I can imagine a lot of people are experiencing the same. The platform is also boosting a lot of miserable accounts that are "verified", a badge that has really lost all meaning.
So will I keep using X even though my unliked tweets doubled? Yeah probably. It is still the most interesting/funniest text-based platform and serves me more things related to my interests. As I mentioned earlier, I have a newfound appreciation for "president twitter" which posts a lot of photos and documents from the JFK-Clinton administrations.
As for the alternative platforms, I will continue to use Threads and Bluesky, but I still find that they do not offer me much. Threads seems to only be serving me clickbait or posts from grumpy millenials and Gen X users, and Bluesky hasn't figured out anything about me yet. I am starting to give up on Threads, and continue to be hopeful about Bluesky.
Oh yeah, my Threads account has a whopping 38 unliked posts in 2024 (I posted there about as often as Twitter), and my Bluesky has 4 unliked posts (I did not start using again until about a month ago).
Thanks to Bluesky's "starter pack" feature, I now have 5 times more follows on there than my X account, which I have had since 2009. Threads will give me a non-liked post one day, and then 100 likes the next, more than anything I had on X this year. There's some promise on other platforms, but I am only one poster.
Happy new year everyone!
